Why mindset is so important to your wellness

Mindset is one of the single most important things in your overall wellness and happiness AND you (we all) have complete control over. I would like to talk about what exactly mindset is, why mindset is so important to your wellness and how to change from a fixed mindset to a g

What is mindset:

The definition of mindset is simply: the set of beliefs that you choose to have. It impacts your thoughts, feelings, actions and results.

Mindset is broken down into 2 main categories: Fixed and growth.

  1. Fixed Mindset: the belief that you are who you are, and it doesn’t matter what kind of effort you put in. You either have it or don’t. Failure is the limit of my abilities.
  2. Growth Mindset: the belief that you can develop talents and skills through effort and trying new things. Failure is an opportunity to grow.

Some examples of fixed vs growth:

Either I am good at it or not vs. I can learn to do anything I want to learn

That’s just who I am, I can’t change it vs. I am constantly growing and developing

2 main ways a growth mindset can improve our life:

  1. We must fail to succeed.
    • From the day we are born until the day we die, we are failing. Thank a growth mindset to being able to walk!  How many times did we fall (aka fail)? Our growth mindset tells us- I can learn to do this, I just need to keep trying.
    • Imagine if we were born with a fixed mindset, how many people would not have learned to walk? A growth mindset is the key to having the life that we want.
    • “Failure is success in progress”. ~ Albert Einstein
  2. Stepping out of our comfort zone leads to joy and the life that we want.
    • A fixed mindset likes comfort. A growth mindset knows that stepping out of our comfort zone is how we get what we want. Think about the thing that has brought you the most happiness in life… now think about how you got that. I can almost guarantee it didn’t just drop on your lap effortlessly.
    • Next time you want to try something new, remember that feeling of awkwardness is temporary and is just a step towards your next great thing.

Why is mindset so important to our wellness?

Lasting change comes from the inside. It doesn’t matter what is externally happening, if your mindset is poor, you cannot have the life you want. Nothing will ever be enough; you will always be searching for the next thing or more.

It is estimated that people have 50,000-70,000 thoughts per day! Our thoughts control our feelings, our feelings cause our actions, and our actions create our results. So, if the majority of our thoughts are negative our results are going to be negative. There is no way around it.

No matter what you are trying to accomplish in life- losing weight, feeling less tired, being less anxious, getting a new job, ANYTHING- it is directly tied to your mindset.

So now what, how can I get a growth mindset?

  • Pay attention to your thoughts and words:
    • If they are automatically negative, then it is because we have trained them to be. So, it will take some time to retrain. Let those negative thoughts and words be a cue to you. If you find yourself thinking “It doesn’t matter what I do, I can never change.” Immediately change your thought to something like “By putting work into this, I will be able to change.”
  • Try adding the word “yet” to the end of a thought:
    • If you find yourself saying – “I can’t ____”, just add the word yet to the end. This is a gentle way to start switching our thoughts.
  • Practice:
    • Next time a challenge comes your way, take it. Start practicing being in situations where you may fail. Or think about something that you have been wanting to learn or get better at. Brainstorm ways you can do this and start making small changes towards it.
  • Switch it up:
    • Our words have power! Just changing the word fail, to the word learn can help. Instead of saying- I failed at ____, say I learned that ____ was not the way to do it.
